Graphic Designers Around the World Love Apple

Harshini Shannon Wijeratne:

I can't survive without my Mac. Designing is a pleasure with Mac, unlike PC's (crashing, bugs etc.) I use Adobe Creative Suite CS3, designing with that is a dream. Upgrading to Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard has given me a few problems on the mobile side, which I',m planning to get sorted out fairly quickly.

Margarita Kagelidou:
I'm a graphic designer and I've been using macintosh since forever! I just love them!

The Evolution of My Mac... Janice Henninger O'Brien

"Currently I have an iMac and I love it. I'm a graphic designer who started out on a drawing board covered with rubber cement and ink. My boss got me my first Apple in 1986. We had to put the costs under general office supplies since the company only allowed IBMs and hid it in the dark room. It took years for corporations to realize designers needed Macs! There were barely any design programs developed for PCs then.

Initially I used Pagemaker, but quickly changed over to Quark, still my favorite program. There was no MS Word/Office so I had to type all the copy for ads, annual reports etc. Eventually they developed optical scanning software so one could scan typed pages. That wasn't efficient either since it didn't read a lot of punctuation. There were a lot of typos in those days since there was no spell check.

Looking back I don't how I survived, always fighting for my Mac. And my Apple crashed daily if not hourly. I've been a loyal Apple customer for years and proud of it!"

Thanks Apple.... love, Earth

This Monday (5th October), Apple announced that it was quitting the US Chamber of Commerce in protest at the body's policy on climate change. Well done Steve I say. He's obviously had a major change of heart since January 2007 when he famously told greenpeace protesters;
"Get out of the computer industry & go save some whales"
Nice.
Here's the letter Apple wrote to the Chamber;
"Apple is committed to protecting the environment and the communities in which we operate around the world," read the letter, signed by Apple vice president Catherine Novelli. "As a company we are working hard to reduce our own greenhouse gas emissions by relying on renewable energy at our facilities and designing more energy-efficient products for our customers..."For those companies who cannot or will not do the same, Apple supports regulating greenhouse gas emissions, and it is frustrating to find the Chamber at odds with us in this effort."

Hamish Muir's Apple Story

This is Hamish Muir's response to my request for a contribution. Nice to see a well known designer can still take the time to help out a student.

This is the story of how Apple has influenced him as a designer, from his first Mac for which he could only afford one font, to the present day. All extracts taken from his book '8vo: On the Outside'

"Towards the end of 1989 we bought our first computer. By the middle of 1990 we had started using it to produce typesetting for use in poster artwork. Initially we would output only the letter spaced type & use this in a conventional paste-up but as the museum project progressed, the computer became more fully integrated into the poster design & production process."

"In the spring of 1989 we were commissioned by Holt Hinshaw Pfau Jones to design a second folding poster in the same format as the one from 1987 (see image below)

We began to think about our work as constructing virtual information spaces within the 2-dimensional window of the page. This provided a framework for the development of ideas & approaches for several years to come. Our interest was in 'building' things. This notion of construction would be important when we started working on computers - this job for HHPJ just predated us buying our first Mac (but it would be at least another two years before we had the skills to attempt a job of this complexity using design software)."

Later in 1989 we worked with HHPJ on a competition entry for the Acropolis Museum. They too had just started working on the Mac. One of the project architects flew over from San Francisco to work with us & together we got to grips with the basics of designing on the computer."

"Thank You Apple" Love, Nokia

Forbes magazine publisher Rich Karlgaard, asked the CEO of Nokia if he specifically liked the iPhone.
"Whether I like it or not, I definitely admire the people who make it happen," Kallasvuo said. "I give Apple a lot of credit and thank Apple. They have done a service to the community. We have a credible competitor. I'm the first one to note, before being asked, that Apple made a big favor to this industry."

I'm a Mac...

STUDENTS LOVE APPLE...

Natalie Ha:
"I love the fact that since getting my Mac a year ago it's never EVER crashed on me (touch wood) whereas my PC on the other hand has probably shortened my life span by about 3 years from all the heart attacks I've had from it crashing whenever I'm working on something important"
Patrick:
"for making sure that whenever something new comes out, I cannot restrain myself from buying it!!:-)"
Georgie_Porgie:
"for getting me through day to day life (the ipod) For allowing me to design without the crappy PC crashing on me half way through saving my work! NICE ONE APPLE :)"
Jade Charlotte Berry:
"Thanking apple for the ipod :)"
 Sam Halpin:
"Macs are the best! Mines obviously bought to design on but it's true about them never crashing, had to use a PC the other day (a brand new dell) and was shocked at how detached and clunky it felt. So I guess thank you mac for being superior because it makes my life so much easier!"
